Back to School Laptops 2010

- Student laptops

Are computers/laptops/netbooks on the list of things to buy?
Laptops tend to cost more than desktops for the same level of performance, and while they can be taken to class they are much easier to lose or have stolen.
A well-built desktop can be upgraded to improve performance and will probably last longer compared to the challenges of a school environment; Rugged use, dropping, throwing etc.
How to Choose the Best Student Laptop
1. Check the size of the laptop. It must be small enough and lightweight enough to fit comfortably into a backpack or bag.
Think Lightweight and Thin.
2. Look at the case. Make sure the laptop has a rugged case and that it can withstand rough treatment.
3. Find out which kind of Internet accessibility is available on the laptop. Most new laptops have wireless technology built in. If the laptop you are considering doesn’t have a built-in wireless connection, make sure it has the appropriate slot for a wireless card as well as a modem connection.
4. Count the USB ports available. A laptop should have at least one, but more USB ports are always better.
5. Know what’s inside the laptop. Make sure the laptop has enough computing power to handle the computer’s operating system plus any games, music or work your student gives it to do. Also make sure there is enough hard drive space. Choose a laptop that has a long battery life.
Should you buy them a Netbook or Laptop?
It depends on what tasks your student will need it to perform. If they have computer tasks which require high performance or need to store large amounts of data, then go with a laptop or PC. If you have tasks which require a large viewing area (display) then go with a laptop or PC.
If your student just needs a small compact device for the classroom, then go with a netbook. Whilst the ultra-small laptops or netbooks are very convenient to carry, the “eye-adaptation” for the smaller screens should be a consideration.
Price
The best student laptop is not always the most expensive! Sometimes computers come with preinstalled programs that are useful. Sometimes the programs are junk. Choose computers that have the software included in the price.
