A cheap laptop isn\u2019t necessarily a good laptop!<\/span><\/h2>\n

For example if it\u2019s intended to be used to communicate whilst travelling you\u2019ll probably want a model with Ethernet, Wi-Fi and a modem.<\/span><\/p>\n

If it\u2019s for graphic work you\u2019ll want a model with a large display.<\/span><\/p>\n

For video games, video editing, desktop publishing, you will need additional memory, storage and possibly high-end video and sound cards. Each of these components will increase the cost and the weight of the laptop.<\/span><\/p>\n

Variables such as size, weight, screen dimensions, battery life, and keyboard quality and built-in wireless are things you need to consider.<\/span><\/p>\n

The secret to buying a good cheap laptop computer involves selecting only those features you need.<\/span><\/p>\n

KEY FEATURES TO LOOK FOR:<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
CPU<\/strong>: \u00a0The \u201cCentral Processing Unit\u201d, is the brains of the computer. Sometimes referred to as the processor or central processor, the CPU is where most calculations take place. In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a computer system so make sure the model has a robust one.\u00a0 Laptops advertised at cheap prices often don\u2019t have potent CPUs and it\u2019ll take forever to boot into Windows.<\/span><\/div>\n

RAM:\u00a0 <\/strong>The system memory. Don\u2019t settle for anything less than 256MB of system memory if you want to do more than word processing and e-mail, because Windows applications quickly chew up memory and will cause the laptop to slowdown.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re planning to run multiple applications simultaneously you should consider loading the notebook with 2 GB of RAM.<\/span><\/p>\n

OPERATING SYSTEM: <\/strong>Most PC\u2019s and laptops <\/strong>come preloaded with Microsoft\u2019s consumer operating systems. The basics used for simple tasks typically don\u2019t support joining server domains.<\/span><\/p>\n

HARD DRIVE:<\/strong> \u00a0Make sure the Notebook has a big enough hard drive to store all your data. If you\u2019re going to be down loading video files & music the larger hard drive the better. \u00a0Notebooks vary from 80gig to 500gig.<\/span><\/p>\n

POWER SUPPLY:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the most important aspects of having a laptop computer is having a good power supply.<\/span><\/p>\n

VIDEO CARD: <\/strong>Video performance is notoriously short changed on laptop computers especially in $500 notebooks.<\/span><\/p>\n

PORTS: <\/strong>Review the model\u2019s technical specifications and make sure the chassis includes the ports you require.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most laptops have a parallel port and one PC Card slot and most also have at least two USB ports. Built-in Ethernet comes standard on almost all portables and you can also expect built-in 802.11b wireless components to become standard.<\/span><\/p>\n

BATTERY<\/strong>:<\/strong> Most notebooks come with a lithium ion rechargeable battery, which lasts longer than the less common nickel metal hydride rechargeable and doesn’t need to be replaced as often. If the only battery option doesn\u2019t provide the lifespan you require, you can always buy a second battery.<\/span><\/p>\n

SCREEN SIZE: <\/strong>The type of work you do can affect the screen size and type that is most suitable for you. If you are not worried about graphics a screen size of 12-14″ is acceptable. If the work you are doing is graphically intensive than a 15-17″ is better. Screen sizes range from 12 to 19 inches. A laptop computer with smaller screen is great option if you do not plan to use laptop too much.<\/span><\/p>\n
