Is your Microsoft software genuine?
Published March 16th, 2010 by Roslyn Garavaglia

The other day I heard someone say, “you’re mad if you pay for software, including Windows”.

What! The risk of using counterfeit software is higher than a hippie in a pot plantation. Every year millions of consumers and businesses acquire low cost pirated software unwittingly and end up having a multitude of problems. Like any dodgy product, it can be a serious risk.

Pirated software can contain programming that is harmful to your computer such as malware and viruses. It can lead to a corrupted system, a loss of data, or even identity theft.
Apart from that it’s stealing! (from microsoft)

[Unwitting User] “I bought a computer with windows software already installed but now when I turn it on it tells me the software is not genuine and I am no longer elegible for security updates from microsoft.”

[Bonza] “Where did you get your pc?  You’ve been ripped off go back to them and demand a refund!”

Do you have genuine software?

Check it! Somewhere on your tower or computer case there should be a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker which proves your copy of Windows is genuine.  Along with the sticker you should have an original Windows CD which should match the COA. For example if it says Windows XP Professional then the CD must say the same thing.

Authentic Software

By using Genuine Microsoft Software, you can be confident you’ll have access to the latest features, security, and support.

Genuine Microsoft software is legaly bought at a verified reseller or is shipped with a PC.

The Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a label that helps you identify genuine Microsoft software. A COA is not a software license – it is a visual identifier that assists in determining whether or not the Microsoft software you are running is genuine. However, without it, you will not have a legal license to run Microsoft software. A COA should never be purchased by itself without the software it authenticates.
