Google is about Meaning NOT Keywords
Published October 18th, 2013 by Roslyn Garavaglia Comments Off on Google is about Meaning NOT Keywords

After 15 years Google’s search algorithm has been changed. It’s not an update, it’s not another Panda, it’s a brand new algorithm!

Hummingbird-Google-new-Search-Algorithm-670x415

Whereas the old search algorithm tried to match instances of words in Google’s index, Hummingbird tries to understand the meaning behind each search query.

HOORAY! Nothing much has really changed except Google trying to change the mindset.

Google has always had the same intention; to deliver the best results for a search query, so that the user is satisfied and informed. SEO’s have crowed “content is king” and “you need fresh content” and “be relevant”, and more recently, “social media…….” advice to clients on how best to help their website and business achieve the best outcomes online.

Finally, the focus shifts from keywords and rankings to content and meaning which is what Google has been saying forever. All those updates over the years were an attempt to to rid the index of search manipulators and other predators who tried to game the system…. they prevailed, so  Google decided to replace the algorithm itself. If you’ve been doing the right thing all along, there’s not much to worry about.

Ask yourself these 3 questions to see if you’re in sync with Google’s new thinking;

1. Content Quality: Is the content I am presenting to the user a thorough and comprehensive answer to their question/problem?

2. Look and Feel: Am I appealing to both the text/informational side of the searcher’s brain and the visual side of the brain?

3. Site structure/Navigation: Have I made it easy for visitors to find content beyond the page they landed on?

Can you see there’s nothing much new?

A static web site that never changes and/or self-serving advertising that doesn’t engage users, will not do well in search results.

Fresh and non-promotional content that engages your audience and tells them what they want to know is the “new normal” on the web.

Is an FAQ Page Really Needed?
Published June 23rd, 2012 by Roslyn Garavaglia Comments Off on Is an FAQ Page Really Needed?

Do we need FAQ’s?

Firstly, FAQs should start with not using the word FAQ! Lots of people still don’t understand this acronym. Use Frequently Asked Questions instead or be inventive. We call ours the Bonza Help Centre. over atBonzawebsites.

If I’m in a rush and want an answer to the most common questions, I go straight to the FAQ page on a website. If there’s no Frequently Asked Questions page I may abandon that site and search elsewhere rather than sift through the site’s content to find the information.

Having said that, if the site architecture of the website is designed well and the content thought out very carefully, the information might be right in front of me and that site will not have or need an FAQ Page. That’s ideal!

How to tell if you need an FAQ

When you start hearing the same questions repeated over and over in emails, during phone calls and face-to-face with your users, is a good indication they’re not finding answers in your site content. You could look at your site content and address the issue there, and, or, start developing an FAQ page.

A dynamic FAQ page can be a valuable part of your web site, particularly if it’s considered a knowledge asset and maintained with the same care as the rest of the material on the site. Key word here is, “dynamic”, keep it up to date and useful like you regularly update the rest of your site.

Design an Effective FAQ Page

Most businesses throw what they deem to be likely questions and answers on the page and call it a day. Others continue to dump random badly written information which is not customer focused.  A “great” FAQ page should be designed to make life easier for your visitors.

Craft answers to questions carefully, don’t just write down the quickest, first thing that comes into your head. The key to a successful faqs page is to provide information that not only informs, but helps your visitor to take action instead of hitting the back button. A good way to get feedback or have users interacting, make it easy for them to ask a new question. If someone can’t find the question, it’s likely they’ll want to ask it. You could include a question form or just make sure your contact details are easy to find from that page.

Summary

FAQ pages can be one of the most useful parts of any website, but without proper thought they can also be a pile of junk. Make sure you think about how your visitors will actually use your FAQs, and make sure you consider their needs throughout the design process.

Take the time to turn your answers into something that keeps your user reading and intrigued. Write something that causes them to feel you offer something no one else does and then write an action phrase that helps your visitor to click on the “take action” link”.

A new version of Google Analytics is here…
Published November 19th, 2011 by Roslyn Garavaglia Comments Off on A new version of Google Analytics is here…

The new version of Google Analytics is probably already activated in your account. Have you seen it yet? If you still see the old dashboard you need to cast your eyes to the top of the page and click on “New Version”.

Google has added real-time reports to monitor visitors actively looking at your site. Real time reporting shows you what’s happening on your site – right now!

Real time analytics

The reports are updated continuously and each pageview is reported seconds after it occurs on your site. You’ll find Real-Time reports in the ‘Home’ tab.

Another feature which should be of interest to you is Mobile Reporting. As more and more visitors use mobile devices to browse the web, the Mobile reports in the new version of Google Analytics will help you understand how mobile visitors are interacting with your site. You can even see which mobile devices your visitors use and optimise for those devices.

According to Google, traffic from mobile devices and smart phones like iPhone, iPad and Android is exploding. And 50% of the searches from these devices is for local goods and services like yours.

Bonzawebsites will be offering Bonza Mobile Web Design in a couple of weeks and we urge you to take a look at your current website on mobile devices now to see how it renders.  Do you need a Mobile Website?

Speak to you soon,

The Best Title Tags
Published November 7th, 2011 by Roslyn Garavaglia Comments Off on The Best Title Tags

The information below will help you create the best title tags, title tags Google will like.

      • Keep the length of your title tags 70 characters or less. Shorter the better.
      • Make sure that the title tag is relevant to the body text.
      • Use your keyword at the beginning of the tag.
      • Remove duplicate title tags across the website.
      • Create unique title tag for each web page
      • Use brand names in the middle of the title tags so that it doesn’t get truncated by Google easily.
      • Make sure that a website doesn’t have web pages with missing title tags. Google can create its own title where the title tag is missing.

This video sums it up better than I can, so take heed and you’ll end up creating the best Title tags that Google will love.

Wistia

Here is what Google says about changing your title tags:

“Google’s creation of sites’ titles and descriptions (or “snippets”) is completely automated and takes into account both the content of a page as well as references to it that appear on the web………..Make sure that each page on your site has a useful and descriptive page title (contained within the title tags. If a title tag is missing, or if the same title tag is used for many different pages, Google may use other text we find on the page. “

++ A Lazy Bugger’s Blog Post ++
Published September 20th, 2011 by Roslyn Garavaglia Comments Off on ++ A Lazy Bugger’s Blog Post ++

What are the elements of a good Blog?

I spend time thinking about Headlines to catch your attention…… I toss in some “How to” articles and Top 5 lists, add some Why’s, and explain Benefits. I make personal admissions, and use a conversational style to engage you. My paragraphs are mostly short with easy sentences using words that don’t require a dictionary.  I write sub-headings and use bullet points so you can see at a glance if it’s worthwhile reading further.

All the bolded words above are Elements of a good Blog.

Is there something I missed?
