Laptop Health Guide
Published September 11th, 2010 by Roslyn Garavaglia

The Do’s and Don’ts for everyday Laptop use.

Greetings customers,

This laptop health guide will help you care for your notebook to protect your data, and prevent costly repairs.

First things first:

If you turn over your laptop and have a look on the underside you will notice several vents. These are used as an intake system for the laptops cooling. Blocking these off can cause many issues due to heat. Overheating can cause your laptop to lose hard drive integrity (which means losing your very important data), losing your wireless, destroying your ram as well as your processor and mainboard!

How to prevent heat damage to your laptop:

To prevent blocking off the vents, you should always use your laptop on a firm cool surface that doesn’t have much movement or flex. This will allow your laptop to draw air underneath and expel it out of the side vents. You should never use it on your lap or on a bed. Also, be very wary about loose paper and table cloths. As the fans suck air in, the paper and cloth can be drawn into the vents and potentially stick which will restrict air flow.

Important information regarding rough treatment:

It is extremely important not to knock your laptop around too much. The main part to fail due to an impact is your hard drive, which stores ALL of your very important data, photos, programs and documents. Drives that have suffered an impact can be extremely difficult if not impossible to retrieve data off.

There are special companies that may be able to retrieve the data with forensic level tools… but the cost can be absolutely immense. It can even cost up to as much as 2 brand new computers for them to retrieve your data!

It only takes the same amount of force as a hand clap to severely damage a hard drive if hit the wrong way.

Another no-no is putting pressure on the screen of your laptop because it can very easily shatter the screen. Also, never slam the laptop lid down hard as this can cause the screen to shatter too. Laptop screens can cost up to 3 times the price of a standard desktop screen to replace!

If you follow this basic guide to laptops you will be able to look forward to a very long hassle-free future with your new notebook.
