‘Get your hand off it, Darryl’
Published March 7th, 2011 by Roslyn Garavaglia

Remember The Castle? The funniest Australian comedy.

Darryl Kerrigan went straight to Australia’s heart – a down-to-earth battler, true blue, believing in The Highest Principle the government cannot evict a man from his home – his Castle.

For many years Bonza has supported Variety, the children’s charity because of every dollar donated, 88c goes directly to profoundly disabled Queensland children.

Every year, we take a table at the Variety Ball and invite some Bonza customers as our guests. It’s a great night to dress up in our finest gear for fun with our appreciative customers, fabulous food and wine, brilliant entertainment and, because Variety is the charity of The Show Business Industry, we get to spot some of our favourite celebrities.

We buy tickets in all the raffles and get very excited by the auction of fantastic things. Bonza takes great pride in having had our table responsible for over $10,000 to Variety every year!

Last year – Master of Ceremonies (Patron of Variety Queensland), Michael Caton, along with Master Chef Matt Moran, offered themselves as a prize in an auction, “Dinner with A Legend” (Michael at Matt’s Aria Restaurant in Eagle Street, Brisbane.)

Everyone at The Bonza Table was up for that big time, and we quickly agreed on a syndicate to bid for “Dinner with A Legend”.

We were the winning bidders and this week, suffer in your jocks, we dined with this Aussie treasure, Michael Caton.

Fame? You’re dreaming….

After 40 years as a notable actor, you’d think dining with fans and strangers would be tiresome…

What a delightful, successful and affable man. Michael is as sweet-natured as his character Darryl Kerrigan.

Chatting later with Variety’s Claire Freer, a mother of three who nonetheless finds time to work tirelessly pulling all the great fund raisers together for Variety, we suddenly realised what this wonderful charity is really all about.

Passion to maximise help for kids by perfecting the art of fundraising.

Claire was at the dinner to ensure all went well. Matt Moran made sure it did! Michael, as the focal point, made sure everyone “got a good run” by having a solid, one-on-one chat with him and, of course, getting the pic with Michael.

Our guests, fellow winning bidding syndicate members, went away very glad they’d donated so generously to Variety.

How good was that?!
