Does your Laptop randomly shut off?
Published July 16th, 2009 by Roslyn Garavaglia

Usually there’s no warning; you could be doing a presentation to a client, visiting an important website, watching a video etc. When you hit the power button it might go to the start up screen or just freeze before shutting down. You’ve done a virus and malware scan and found nothing… what the…?

How Frustrating!

Well, it could be simply your laptop is overheating. How often do you clean it? Desktops and laptops are like vacuum cleaners sucking in dust, pet hair, cigarette ash and residue. This dirt can affect your display screen, impact on the performance of the fans and cause problems with I/O ports.

Before attempting to clean your laptop, read the User’s Manual for your brand.

You’ll need:

  • Compressed Air
  • Cotton Swabs
  • Soft cleaning cloth
  • Cleaning solution

The Case
Use a soft cloth to clean the casing. Never spray cleaning solution directly onto the casing, spray it onto the cleaning cloth first.

Cooling Vents
Use the can of compressed air to clean the cooling vents. Do not spray too hard, you don’t want liquid to form on the fan blades. Use the cotton swabs to hold the fan in place while you clean them because spraying can over spin them.

I/O Ports
Use the cotton swabs to wipe away any dirt. You can use the can of compressed air too but be careful you don’t blow dust into the ports.

If the shutdown problem persists then it’s something more complex and you’ll need a Bonza technician to take a look at it.
