Computer networks for the home and small business can be built using either wired or wireless technology. Wired Ethernet has been the traditional choice in homes, but Wi-Fi wireless technologies can offer superior performance.
Fast Ethernet should be sufficient for home file sharing, gaming, and high-speed Internet access.
Because there can be a multitiude of configurations and hardware and software combinations, consider these points before jumping into networking your computers;
– how many computers do you want to network
– whether you want mobile computers included
– what operating system(s) are you running
– what type of Internet service do you have
– how do you plan to use your networked computers
– where will the networked computers be located in your home
Wired vs Wireless
Wired:
Cost: The cheapest option
Reliability: High
Performance: Very Good
Security: Reasonably Good
Mobility: Limited
Wireless:
Cost: More expensive
Reliability: Reasonably High – beware of interference
Performance: Good
Security: Reasonably Good
Mobility: Excellent
