When you search on Google, would it be good if the results pages changed as you type?
Google’s search changes does just that. It has already been rolled out in the USA, UK, Russia and France, maybe others, but not here (not in Oz yet!).
Google Instant provides search results pages (SERPS) with every keystroke. You may find exactly what you’re looking for before you even finish typing your query!
Google’s predictive search feature is still there but appears in grey text directly in the search box, so you can stop typing as soon as you see what you’re looking for.
We already have predictive search; as you type, Google predicts what you’re looking for and presents a dropdown to match your intention, you click on the closest match and the results are there. Often, the results aren’t what you’re looking for and you scroll down the page looking for a closer match or you go back to refine your search query. With Google Instant results are returned faster and Google’s predictions are smarter.
If you have a Google Account you will have seen it in action. If not you can check it out here: http://www.google.com/landing/instant/
When we finally have it rolled out here, it might take a while to adapt to the change so luckily it can be turned off by clicking the link next to the search box on any search results page, or by visiting your preferences.
Google is always tweaking but this year in particular we’ve seen substantial changes.
1. The May Day algorithm: An algorithmic change, not a search or ranking change, targeted at long tail search queries. Because about 54.5% of user queries are greater than 3 words Google wants higher quality sites to appear for long tail queries. The change seems to have primarily impacted very large sites with “item” pages that don’t have many individual links pointing to them, or pages that are located several clicks away from the home page, and pages that don’t have substantial unique and value-added content on them.
2. Then came Caffeine, the new crawling and indexation infrastructure change which had little impact on most people.
3. And now, the biggest change of all, Google Instant.
Every time there’s a change alarm bells go off in the online professional community.
How will it impact on SEO and Pay Per Click? How can businesses take advantage……
We can’t tell what Instant will do to search engine optimisation or PPC yet, but if we’re smart we’ll see and understand what Google is trying to achieve – help searchers find information and results quickly. That’s not new, it’s always what they’ve been about! All we can do is follow their lead and provide exactly that; stuff and information people are looking for, match their search queries and hopefully be ranked at the top of results.
